Artist's Statement
My work in clay embodies large free-form coiled sculptures of vessels. I form the outer texture, which reveals the nature of the clay body, during the process of constructing the pot. The openings are small; the viewer's eye is thus directed to the clay's exterior surface, while the mind is invited to contemplate the space within.
Clay is a medium of earth, a symbol of motherhood. We ourselves are of the earth, nurtured within a womb, a closed vessel. These forms manifest my interest in the ancient feminine mystical view of life in its darkness and mystery, its celebrations and creativity.
